When Should you go

What is happening in Tanzania each month of the year

There is no single best month for a Tanzania safari, only the best month for what you want to see. Wildebeest calving, river crossings, empty parks after the rains, golden light at the height of the dry season. Each one has its own draw, and our specialists can help you match the month to the trip.

The short rains have passed and the plains around Ndutu turn a soft, fresh green. Over half a million wildebeest calves are born within a few short weeks, drawing predators in close behind them. Warm days, light crowds, and some of the richest predator action of the year.

Calving season continues across the southern Serengeti, and newborn wildebeest now outnumber the adults. The light stays clear and golden, the grass is short enough to see for miles, and this remains one of the finest, quietest months to be in the Serengeti.

The long rains begin to arrive, and the plains deepen into a lush, dramatic green. The wildebeest start to gather into their great herds, readying themselves for the migration north. Parks are quiet and rates are gentler, a favourite window for returning guests.

The wettest month of the year, with rain most afternoons and mornings that stay clear for game viewing. Many camps close briefly, but those that stay open offer a wilder, more private Tanzania, with birdlife at its most spectacular and landscapes at their greenest.

The rains begin to ease and the bush comes alive with new growth. The great herds start their long push north through the Serengeti, and with far fewer visitors around, this is a quietly rewarding month for travellers who value space and stillness.

The dry season begins, skies clear for good, and the herds move steadily through the western and central Serengeti. Mornings turn cool and crisp, ideal for early game drives, while the bush thins out and wildlife becomes easier to spot with every week that passes.

The great migration reaches the Grumeti River, and the drama of the crossings begins. Days are warm and dry, evenings are cool, and this marks the start of the very best months for classic, wide open safari conditions across the northern parks.

Herds push on towards the Mara River in the north, delivering some of the most thrilling crossings of the year. Dry, dust free air and clear skies make for exceptional visibility, and wildlife gathers reliably at every waterhole across the parks.

The migration lingers around the Mara River, with crossings continuing through the month. Days stay warm, nights turn cooler still, and the dry conditions bring animals into the open in search of water, making for some of the most consistent game viewing of the year.

The dry season holds firm across the north, and the herds begin their slow return south. Golden grass, dust lit skies at sunset, and wildlife concentrated around the last remaining water sources make this one of the most photogenic months to travel.

The short rains arrive, softening the dust and coaxing fresh green shoots from the plains. Herds continue their journey south towards Ndutu, ready for another calving season. Storms tend to be brief and dramatic, often followed by clear afternoon light.

The rains ease and the plains turn green once again, drawing the herds back towards the south in time for calving. Warm, bright days and a real sense of renewal across the parks make this a lovely, less crowded month to close out the year.
